Volkswagen GTI German Car Inspection

Auto Werkstatt recently inspected a 2016 Volkswagen GTI with 79,530 miles at its Kent, WA shop. During the diagnostic inspection, technicians checked the vehicle’s timing measurements using a scan tool and found readings ranging from 6 to 8 degrees, outside the documented specification of +/- 5 degrees. The technician noted that measurements above 5 degrees indicate a stretched timing chain.

The timing chain was then physically inspected. The measurement from the exhaust phaser timing mark to the intake phaser mark was 127.80 mm, compared with the documented normal range of 124 to 126 mm. The timing chain guides were also found to be worn and discolored. Based on these findings, Auto Werkstatt recommended replacing the timing chain, timing chain guides, upper and lower timing covers, and camshaft bridge.

The multipoint inspection also identified signs of leakage along the edges of the valve cover, also referred to in the inspection as the cam ladder. The remainder of the documented inspection showed tire tread measurements of 8/32 on both front tires and 9/32 on both rear tires, with both front and rear brake pads measuring 9 mm.
