A 2015 Audi A3 Premium Plus was brought to Auto Werkstatt after the owner reported a check engine light associated with a transmission malfunction. The vehicle was experiencing a loss of reverse gear and entering reduced-power mode. The customer also requested an oil and filter service along with a comprehensive multipoint inspection.
Technicians scanned the vehicle and found a stored P174E00 fault code in the transmission control module, indicating an electrical error with Valve 3. A corresponding transmission warning request was also stored in the engine control module. Diagnostic testing indicated a likely failure of the third solenoid within the transmission’s mechatronic unit, which could cause the vehicle to enter limp mode or reduced-power mode.
During the inspection, technicians found no visible transmission damage or leaks, and the wiring appeared to be in good condition. A road test showed that the transmission was shifting normally, without slipping or delayed shifts. Based on the stored fault code and the intermittent nature of the concern, technicians recommended replacing the mechatronic unit, performing the necessary coding and transmission fluid services, and completing a thorough road test afterward to verify proper operation.
The multipoint inspection also identified several maintenance and repair concerns. Multiple potential sources of engine oil leakage were observed, and the engine oil level was low when the vehicle arrived. Technicians topped off the oil for safe operation and recommended cleaning the affected areas, performing leak testing, and measuring crankcase pressure to determine the source of the leaks and whether excessive crankcase pressure was contributing to them.
Additional findings included a leaking driver-side rear shock absorber, for which replacement of the rear shocks and mounts was recommended. The front brake pads measured approximately 3 mm on the right and 4 mm on the left, and the rotors had visible grooves. Technicians recommended replacing the front brake pads and rotors. The rear brake pads measured approximately 4–5 mm and should be monitored, with replacement options discussed as they approach the recommended service threshold.
Other maintenance items included a brake fluid service, which was recommended based on time since the last service in 2024, replacement of the cabin air filter, and attention to mild streaking from the front wipers. All four tires measured approximately 8/32 inch of tread, and the battery had recently been replaced.
Auto Werkstatt’s diagnostic inspection identified a likely mechatronic solenoid fault behind the Audi’s transmission warning and reduced-power symptoms, along with several additional maintenance needs. The recommended next steps included mechatronic unit replacement and verification testing, further diagnosis of the engine oil leaks, rear suspension repairs, and front brake replacement to help address the vehicle’s repair and maintenance priorities.
